Cave  Visualization of Mechanical Behavior of Nanocrystalline Ni

Simulations performed at the Paul Scherrer Institute  in the group of  Helena van Swingenhoven.  Visualized at the Virginia Tech CAVE.

The movie shows the emission of a partial dislocation   from   a grain boundary.
The gray atoms are grain boundary atoms and the red atoms are  atoms with HCP-like environment.
atoms with FCC-like environment are not shown.

The partial dislocation emitted leaves a stacking fault as it moves,  which is seen as red atoms because of the local  HCP-like environment.
