Tecplot

Tecplot, marketed by Amtec, is, at least in my opinion, the standard for 3D scientific visualization. It is a very powerful software, capable of employing just about any visualization algorithm. The user can generate graphs, 2D and 3D contours and streamlines. Tecplot also supports probing and scalar gradient interpolation.

Tecplot however has few drawbacks which make unsuitable to act as a virtual testing environment. Tecplot is designed to generate pictures and movies that can later be distributed through the scientific community. It, however, does not support immersion on scales available using the CAVE. Furthermore, there is no support in Tecplot for online collaboration. Tecplot also isn't cheap - the cost for a single user license is approximately $1500 dollars.

capVTE was not designed to be a complete replacement of Tecplot. Many features available in Tecplot, such as probing or streamline generation, are not available in capVTE. These features will most likely be added in the future versions, however, the most immediate goal of the capVTE development is a generation of a fully immersed visualization environment. Tecplot is also very diverse, while capVTE was designed with computational fluid/plasma dynamics in mind. As such, capVTE easily supports addition of glyphs, geometries and a computational grid to the visualization domain. capVTE will thus become a virtual lab, while Tecplot will remain a tool for generation of visual media for scientific communication.
